SERVICES & WORKSHOP

Steelworks NZ Ltd have experienced and fully qualified structural steel fabricators to AS/NZS standards who can assemble and join steel to your design specifications and requirements.  We specialise in projects ranging from commercial and industrial buildings to house and deck beams, stairs, handrails, balustrades, pipework, metalwork and plate work.

Steelworks NZ Ltd have gained AS/NZ ISO 3834 International Institute of Welding qualification and we are a certified fabricator under the accredited Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) Quality Assurance Scheme.  This provides procurers and specifiers with certainty of product quality, and shows that we have proven procedures and personnel that represent international best practice.

At our 2000 m sq factory and 4000 m sq yard on Hewletts Road, Mt Maunganui, we are able to provide steel from single flitch beam to multi tonne structures for projects anywhere in New Zealand, and abroad. Our experienced team will work with you and deliver as required.

Detailing

Once a project is secured the detailing process begins.  We have two in-house detailers using Tekla Steel Detailing software whose role is to take the design drawings and create component drawings that can be interpreted by the workshop staff.

Our detailers are proactively involved in the design process to achieve the most efficient and accurate end result for the customer.  Working closely with the project engineers and architects and the rest of the project team, we provide in-house fabrication and erection drawings for each project.  This detailing information is transferred into our new robotic plasma cutting and coping machine to efficiently streamline the process from detailing to the fabrication of structural steel.

Fabrication

Fabrication is the process used to manufacture steelwork components that will, when assembled and joined, form a complete structure.  Using steel sections sourced from local steel merchants and working from the detail drawing components, steel is cut, drilled and welded into transportable components.  Each component has a unique number and is marked for easy identification.

All our welders are qualified to AS/NZS standards.  We also have a fully HERA qualified Welding Supervisor carrying out all welding supervision activities as set out in AS 2214:2004 which includes 100% in house visual scanning of all welding.  We operate using an extensive range of pre-qualified and 3rd party approved welding procedures.

Our purpose build workshops are fitted with overhead cranes to allow them to mobilise items through the shop more efficiently.  They have specialised equipment and installed new technology such as the robotic plasma cutting and coping machine to streamline the fabrication process.

Surface Protection

Steelworks provide painting and galvanizing steel to suit every specification and is prepared by either wire brushing or grit blasting.  Any surface protection requirements are carried out by specialist sub-contractors to meet project specifications.

The majority of surface protection is done by Bay Sandblasting – a specialist industrial painting company with the capacity, experience and quality control required to apply coatings to their fabricated products.

We also liaise and coordinate the outsourcing of non-paint finishes such as galvanising or zinc coatings.

Steel Erection

Site erection of structural steel

To complement their drawing and workshop teams they also provide fully trained and qualified site erection crews with their own equipment and cranes to enable the erection of fabricated structural steel in a safe and timely manner.  Components are transported to site for erection by one of their site teams. They own and operate a fleet of site vehicles, cranes, truck cranes, and access platforms.

Steelworks NZ Ltd are fully committed to ensure all site crews are fully trained and competent in their roles including:  Site Safe Construction Passports, elevated work platform (EWP), hazard ID, understand Site Safety Specific Plans, all crane operations, welding qualifications, first aid certification, OSH forklift licences, dogman, H&S Rep training, and SFC high strength bolt training certificates.  They also hold Site Wise Green status and have a Health & Safety Coordinator to monitor and ensure all H&S responsibilities and practices are communicated to all staff and management.

Seismic Strengthening

Seismic strengthening

Steelworks specialise in seismic strengthening construction for individual requirements of specific projects.  We have specialised equipment to work inside buildings and constricted spaces, and experienced staff to deal with the individual requirements of specific projects.

As a material of choice steel can be engineered to better withstand earthquakes.  Steel should be at the top of the list to protect against earthquake damage.
